Children's Ministry

At the Southside Church of Christ,
We Love Children!

  • Sunday mornings are a special time for kids and families at Southside. We enjoy serving your children with the love that Christ so generously lavishes upon each one of us. Beginning at 9:30 a.m., we have Bible classes for kids of all ages including nursery and preschool classes.

  • During our 10:30 a.m. worship time, we have three different programs that your child may wish to attend. These programs are optional, as kids are always welcome to sit with their families during worship. These programs run all year long and do not meet on 5th Sundays of the month and various special family times through out the year. (The Attended Nursery will be staffed every Sunday morning including the summer and 5th Sundays.)

  • Children’s Worship is our children’s church for kids ages 4 years through 2nd grade. This program meets in room B in the Education Wing. Children’s Worship is an age-appropriate worship time for children where Bible lessons are presented in kid-friendly language with age-appropriate activities. We sing, pray, learn about the Bible, play games and worship God together. Children’s Worship participants are dismissed during the worship service, usually following the Lord’s Supper.

  • Preschool Station is a program for children ages 2 to 4 that will be meeting across the hall in the Preschool room. This is a fun place for your child to play during worship. Parents must check their children in and out of this program. No older siblings please.

  • Attended Nursery is for infants and toddlers ages birth through 23 months. We provide safe and loving care in a clean and nurturing environment. Our nursery is staffed with volunteers each Sunday morning. Please bring your child’s bag with you. You will be asked to sign in and may provide your cell number if you wish for the staff to contact you if the need arises. (Please place your phone on vibrate.)

After worship, a parent must pick up their child from the appropriate program.  Children will not be released until a parent arrives. For the consideration of the volunteers staffing the programs, please pick up your child within 10 minutes of the conclusion of our assembly time.

Thank you for entrusting us with your child during our time of worship. We hope your time with us is an enjoyable one.

Children are God’s gift, entrusted to us to nurture
and to train up according to His word.
Psalm 127:3

Nursery_Ministry_Picture Children are our special responsibility, entrusted to our care by God. It is the mission of our nursery staff here at Southside to provide a place where young children are loved, nurtured, and cared for. In our nursery, infants, and toddlers age 0-2 years, have their first introduction to their church home. We take every precaution necessary to ensure that these young children have a loving and safe environment in which to learn and grow. Here they learn from loving caregivers what Jesus taught the children: God loves you!!

"Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them,
for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these."
Mark 10:14

Attended Nursery
Nursery_Ministry_Picture The nursery is located in the windowed-room just off the auditorium.

Attended Nursery is for infants and toddlers ages birth through 23 months. There is another room for children ages 2-4 that is more suited to their needs.

Please notify the nursery volunteer(s) of any allergies, special instructions, or medical needs for your child.

Room for Nursing Mothers
There is a separate quiet room (located in the classroom that is first on your left as you head down the West hallway) that is available during the worship assembly time for nursing mothers or young infants in need of a place to rest. This room has rocking chairs and crib beds available for use. There are speakers so you do not have to miss the service.

What to Bring
A marked diaper bag with all items your child may need.

  • 3-4 diapers and wipes
  • Pre-mixed bottles or sipper cup
  • A pacifier (if applicable); please provide pacifier clips to keep pacifiers from becoming lost, dropped, or exchanged.
  • Complete change of clothes

Please label in a visible place everything your child brings--including diaper bags, carriers and car seats, changes of clothing, coats, cups, pacifiers, bottles, etc.

Health Considerations
If your child is sick he/she will be more comfortable at home. Please do not expose other children and the nursery staff unnecessarily to infection.

Young children are very susceptible to colds, flus and other diseases. We want to help eliminate these concerns as much as possible; so if your child exhibits any of the following symptoms, please do not bring him/her to the Nursery:

  • Fever (must be fever-free without medication for 24 hours)
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (free of vomiting and/or diarrhea for 24 hours)
  • Common cold – excessive cough
  • Any symptoms of childhood diseases, such as scarlet fever, measles, chicken pox, strep throat, flu, etc., or any infectious contagious disease
  • Chicken pox – all sores must be completely scabbed over and dry underneath.
  • Heavy nasal discharge (green)
  • Any unexplained rash
  • Any skin infection – hand-foot-mouth disease, fifth disease, etc.
  • Inflammation or discharge from eyes (all eye infections are contagious, must be on medication for 24 hours before returning)
  • When in doubt, please apply the Golden Rule.

If your child becomes ill while in the nursery, you will be notified promptly. If your child is being treated with an antibiotic, he or she should have received treatment for at least 24 hours before being brought to the Nursery.

For your child's protection, we ask our caregivers to follow these same guidelines. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation on this matter.

Cradle Roll
The Sunday morning Cradle Roll Bible class is for babies ages birth - 24 months.Nursery_Ministry_Picture Class time is the same as all other Sunday morning classes, 9:30 a.m.

Cradle Roll is a very interactive class time where dedicated teachers share the love of God through age-appropriate Bible stories, songs and finger plays with messages for a child’s heart. We spend a lot of time singing about God's love, patting our Bibles, and singing some more! Cheerios are the staple food! Let us know if your child has any food allergies.

You are welcome in our nursery; however, some children may be upset when they see you "peek in," and it is normal for children to go through various stages of separation anxiety. In most cases, they are easily distracted and crying stops a few moments after you leave. However, If your child continues to cry and our efforts to comfort fail beyond 10 minutes, we will come and get you. Parents are welcome to stay with their child if they so desire.

Volunteers
Parents- The Southside nursery is staffed entirely by volunteers. We encourage anyone with a heart for children as well as all parents of infants, toddlers and preschoolers to serve in the nursery. Thank you for your cooperation and for the privilege of ministering to your children. Our guidelines are meant to make our nursery as healthy and safe as possible for everyone.

Volunteers- As parents you have so much to offer our Nursery! If you attend regularly, please consider volunteering to minister to our little ones on Sunday morning. In doing this you are ministering to other parents as well. I am personally so grateful for my worry-free time of worship! Mothers who have older children often feel they have served their time, and well they have! Let those of us who have young families serve our time as well.

We wish to extend the invitation to those who may not have children in the Nursery to volunteer as well. What a wonderful way to share the gifts God has given each of us, and to get to know some of the littlest members of our church family. You will find the Nursery to be a rewarding place. Please contact Jen Cassity, the Nursery Coordinator, if you are interested in being placed on our volunteer list. You will only be asked to be in the nursery once every three months.

“Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.”

The Pre Teen group at Southside is open to children who are currently attending 4th, 5th or 6th grade. We meet on a monthly basis for Devotionals and or activities. The Pre Teens also participate in outreach activities for the body of believers and the community.

Bible Class Curriculum

Did you know that all of our children from the 5’s/Kindergarten class through the 5th/6th grade class study the same Bible story each Sunday?

We have spent three years writing our own Bible class curriculum that takes our children through the Bible in three years. So, a child who starts in the Kindergarten class and graduates from the sixth grade class will go through the entire Bible two full times (and they'll get a bonus year)!

We know that children retain what they learn best by involving as many senses as possible—visual (We let them see the Bible lessons in several different forms from week to week.), auditory (We read from the Bible, and as they progress in their reading skills let them read some of the verses), tactile (We may have them pound nails to build an ark or finger-paint with “mud”), taste (We shared a Passover meal together.), and by “doing” (We act out stories, role play, do service projects, etc.)

We encourage you, as parents, to be creative too and enjoy your important time sharing and reviewing God’s word with your children.
